Frequently Asked Questions

This sounds like a bunch of .NET guys organizing this. Can I help even if I don't know .NET?
Absolutely! We're looking for talent across the board -- PHP, Ruby, SQL, MySQL, .NET, etc… We want to be able to create solutions for the charities, not showcase a particular technology.

Where is the event being held?
The Ann Arbor Give Camp will be held at Washtenaw Community College (WCC) in Ann Arbor, Michigan. http://www.wccnet.edu

Will there be internet access available?
Yes. WCC has a campus-wide, open wireless network available.

Where can I park?
WCC has plenty of parking available. See their campus map at http://www.wccnet.edu/aboutwcc/collegeinfo/directionsandmaps/campusmap.php

How much time do we have to code?
The whole weekend! The main event starts Friday evening and we (Give Camp Organizers) will be there 24/7 to help support you. However, we do not have any shower facilities. Also, you will need to bring a picture ID to get in during late evening hours.

When do we need to be done?
Please do your best to complete everything by 4:00 pm Sunday afternoon. We'd like to use the last hour or so to get together and show everybody the apps created over the weekend.

Do I need to bring my own computer?
Yes, that would work best. We don't have the resources to supply a loaner laptop/computer to all of the volunteers.

What will the work environment be like?
We'll be using WCC classrooms so we'll have chalkboards/whiteboards, seats, tables and, as noted earlier, free WiFi!

I've got some friends that may not be able to make it. Do they need to register or can they just come with me if they have the time?
We need everyone to please register. Since the WCC campus is locked down at night, we need a list of names to provide to security. Only those on the list will be allowed to enter after hours.

Are you doing websites or creating applications?
It depends on the charity. We'd love to be able to get a charity's web presence started by providing them with some high-tech talent to get the ball rolling, but we also realize some charities may already have a website that doesn't need work. If there's some kind of data entry app or something that will help them out, we'd like to offer that assistance as well.

If we do a website, where will it be hosted?
Verio (http://www.verio.com/) is offering two (2) years of free hosting for any charities we help during Give Camp. Their web servers support .NET 3.5 as well as PHP and MySQL.
